- The fleshy basal rosettes, often spotted with purple, are distinctive. Vegetative plants are often far more numerous than fertile ones. Whether or not the genus Manfreda should be subsumed into Agave, as followed by Flora of Virginia, is debatable.
- Habitat
- Limestone and dolostone barrens and woodlands; also on rocky road banks and other disturbed, rocky areas. Rare, sw. mountains (Ridge and Valley province); known only from Lee County, in and around The Cedars karst region.
