Comments
Plants from sandy woodlands along the Chickahominy River (New Kent Co.) previously mapped as Pityopsis graminifolia var. tenuifolia, and annotated as such by B.A. Sorrie at NCU, are of uncertain disposition. That taxon is now treated as P. microcephala (Small) Small and is reported to range northward only to extreme southern North Carolina, where it is associated with longleaf pine communities. Pityopsis taxonomy is complex and difficult; and not all authorities are in complete agreement on all circumscriptions. Given the recent taxonomic changes in the genus, the phytogeographic uncertainty of the Virginia populations, and the occurrence of plants seeming transitional to P. nervosa at some of the sites, we have "suspended" this taxon from the flora pending a re-examination of specimens by Sorrie.
Habitat
Dune woodlands, scrub, and grasslands; maritime forests, sandhill woodlands, sandstone woodlands and barrens, dry clearings, and roadsides; associated with extremely acidic, usually sandy, nutrient-poor soils. Common in the s. and c. Coastal Plain; rare in the Piedmont; infrequent in the sw. mountains.
