In addition to var. dumosum, the map may contain records of var. subulifolium (Torr. & Gray) Nesom, which needs critical assessment since its range is entirely confluent with that of var. dumosum. Variety cordifolium is also reported from Virginia: a specimen annotated as such from Sussex County is shown in Semple et al 2024, Phytoneuron 2024-43: 1–15. See also map for var. strictior.

In various dry, alternately wet and dry, and seasonally wet habitats, including woodlands, barrens, Piedmont hardpan forests, old fields, roadsides, clearings, depression ponds, and bog ecotones. Common in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont; infrequent and mostly at lower elevations in the mountains.
