- This species was included within Solidago canadensis in Atlas III and its map inludes records attributable to that species. Nevertheless, it no doubt occurs in every county. Plants matching var. altissima occur state-wide, but see Comments under S. altissima var. pluricephala.

- Fields, roadsides, clearings, meadows, and other open, disturbed habitats; strongly rhizomatous and often forming large colonies. Common throughout.
