- Mesic to fairly dry upland forests, well-drained floodplain forests, seepage swamp hummocks, rocky woodlands, and sheltered cliffs and outcrops; usually on moderately to strongly base-rich substrates. Common in the mountains; infrequent in the Piedmont; rare and restricted to shell-marl slopes in the Coastal Plain.
