- Symphyotrichum ×schistosum (Steele) Nesom, the putative hybrid of S. cordifolium and S. laeve, is known only from shale substrates in Virginia, the type specimen collected near Millboro, Bath County. Specimens matching the description of schistosum have recently been collected at several sites in Bath and Augusta counties, including at the type locality. These plants possess the characteristically long, slender stolons and rootstocks seen in the type material and described by Steele (1911) as well as the scarcely cordate to truncate or rounded bases on the lower leaves. - Habitat
- Mesic to dry upland forests, woodlands, and shaded road banks; tolerant of a range of soil chemistries. Common in the mountains; frequent in the Piedmont; infrequent to rare in the Coastal Plain.
