- Comments
- Virginia plants have been referred to var. elodes (Torr. & A. Gray) Nesom, the putative southern var. of the species along the Atlantic coast. It is distinguished from the more northern (but partly sympatric) var. novi-belgii by leaf shape and "sub-clasping" (vs. "clasping") leaf bases; however, some variation in these characters has been observed in Virginia specimens and identification to variety often becomes equivocal and subjective. According to Flora of the Southeastern U.S. (Weakley et al. 2023), "taxonomic issues remain" with this species and we will thus continue to map this as at the species level pending further studies of the issue.
- Habitat
- Freshwater and oligohaline tidal marshes, swamps (all types), bogs, sea-level fens, wet flatwoods, and interdune swales. Frequent in the s. and c. Coastal Plain.
- Native Status
- Native
