- Generally separable from Symphyotrichum patens, both morphologically and ecologically, but sometimes problematic; varietal treatment might be preferable. Probably in all of the mountain counties.
- Habitat
- Mesic to dry-mesic, usually rich upland forests; occasionally in dry calcareous forests and woodlands. Frequent in the mountains, infrequent in the inner Piedmont, rare in the outer Piedmont.
