Aster phlogifolius Muhl. ex Willd.; Aster patens Ait. var. phlogifolius (Muhl. ex Willd.) Nees

Symphyotrichum phlogifolium (Muhl. ex Willd.) Nesom
Generally separable from S. patens, but sometimes problematic; varietal treatment might be preferable. Probably in most of the mountain counties.
Mesic to dry-mesic, usually rich upland forests; occasionally in dry calcareous forests and woodlands. The distribution and status of this species are incompletely known because it has often been lumped with Symphyotrichum patens. It appears to be frequent in the mountains and infrequent in the inner Piedmont.
