Comments
Although lumped by FNA, vars. virginica and laciniata (occurring south of our area) seem distinct, with striking differences in leaf morphology and achene vestiture. In any case, Virginia Coastal Plain populations are somewhat disjunct from other populations of either var.; the Lee County populations are confluent with a wider distribution in Tennessee and Kentucky.
Habitat
Mesic to dry, usually calcareous forests, woodlands, and clearings; most frequent in areas of the Coastal Plain where calcareous shell marl, loose shell deposits, or limesand is at or near the soil surface. Infrequent in the s. and c. Coastal Plain; rare in the sw. mountains (Lee County).
Native Status
Native
