- Comments
- The species map shown here is reproduced from Atlas III with some recent additions. Although many records have been assigned to one of the varieties, others remain in need of reassessment in light of the circumscription by Sorrie and Weakley (2007, J. Bot. Res. Inst. Texas 1(1):269-371). See Comments under the two incomplete varietal maps.
- Habitat
- The species occurs in dry forests, woodlands, clearings, fields, roadsides, open maritime forests, and occasionally in damp peaty soils. It is frequent throughout much of the Coastal Plain and Piedmont, and very infrequent in the mountains. Based on confirmed specimens to date, var. pulchella appears to be heavily concentrated in the Piedmont, while var. ramosissima appears to be confined to the Coastal Plain. Additional field and herbarium studies are needed.
- Native Status
