- Stout, wide-leaved plants that were collected historically in bottomlands of southeastern Virginia have been called Panicum dichotomiflorum var. imperiorum Fernald. Their taxonomic disposition and validity are not clear, and they are not formally treated here pending further study.

- Seasonally exposed shores and bars of rivers and streams, depression ponds, interdune swales and ponds, sloughs in alluvial swamps, impoundments, fields, ditches, roadsides, and waste ground. Common throughout.
