- Comments
- Flora of the Southeastern U.S. calls this species Humulus scandens (Loureiro) Merrill (basionym Antidesma scandens Loureiro 1790), noting that the name has priority over Humulus japonicus Siebold & Zuccarini 1846. That is true, except that according to Small (1997) in FNA3, the material described by Loureiro was not preserved and his description does not match that of H. japonicus. Although Flora of China uses the name Humulus scandens, it confirms that no type specimen of Antidesma scandens has been found and that the name is problematic. Because the situation seems controversial and unresolved, we will continue to use the name Humulus japonicus pending further clarification.
- Habitat
- Floodplain forests, riverbanks, and disturbed alluvial habitats, especially along major rivers, where it has become a rampantly invasive weed. Locally common in the Piedmont and mountains; infrequent to rare in the Coastal Plain.
- Native Status
- Introduced
