- Apparently most of our plants belong to var. flava. Massey attributes var. macrantha Pennell to Bedford Co. without validation. Fernald attributes var. reticulata to 5 co.'s in e. Va., but Pennell maps only N to n.c. N.C.; clearly needing clarification.
- Habitat
- In a wide variety of acidic to strongly calcareous, upland forests and woodlands. Frequent in the mountains and Piedmont; infrequent to rare in the Coastal Plain.
