- According to Flora of the Southeastern U.S., the spelling 'levigata' was used by Rafinesque in the basionym, Gerardia levigata. There is no basis for its "correction" to "laevigata" under provisions of the International Code of Nomenclature (Shenzhen version, 2018).
- Habitat
- Dry-mesic to dry (rarely mesic), oak-dominated upland forests and woodlands; most numerous in acidic, infertile soils but also found in calcareous soils. Common in the mountains and inner Piedmont; infrequent in the outer Piedmont; rare in the Coastal Plain.
