- This is one of a few species whose distribution is strongly centered in the Piedmont from Maryland (formerly) to Georgia.

- Dry forests, rocky woodlands, barrens, clearings, and road banks, usually in moderately to strongly base-rich soils. Frequent in the Piedmont; rare in the mountains and inner Coastal Plain.
