Botanical Name
Geum vernum (Raf.) Torr. & Gray
Common Name
Spring Avens
Flora of Virginia Name/Status
Geum vernum (Raf.) Torr. & Gray
The native range of this species is centered west of the Appalachians. Its distribution and abundance in Virginia have increased greatly over the past few decades. Most of its favored sites were previously disturbed, suggesting the species is partly (or even entirely?) introduced here. It would be informative to know when the earliest collections were made.
Floodplain forests, mesic to dry-mesic upland forests (especially where disturbed), old fields, shaded or alluvial clearings, and roadsides. Infrequent to locally common in the mountains and inner Piedmont.
Native Status
