- Comments
- The species complex in Virginia represented by the map includes O. fruticosa var. fruticosa, O. fruticosa var. microcarpa, O. riparia, and O. unguiculata. Differences between these taxa are subtle and identification can be difficult. Most herbarium specimens have been simply labelled "Oenothera fruiticosa" and we are currently unable to map any segregate taxa except for Oenothera riparia. The entire Oenothera treatment in FSUS is considered "provisional, with further revision likely, especially in the O. fruticosa complex." See also Comments under map of Oenothera tetragona.
- Habitat
- Mesic to dry forests and woodlands, barrens, outcrops, clearings, peaty swales, ditches, fields, and roadsides. Frequent to common throughout, but apparently absent from far sw. Virginia.
- Native Status
- Native
