- The concept of P. australis in Atlas lll (essentially reproduced here) appears to be broader than that envisioned by Pennell (and probably Small also); critical review is needed. Our plants may be recognized as ssp. australis.
- Habitat
- Sandhill woodlands, dry sandy clearings and roadsides. Rare in the s. and c. inner Coastal Plain and perhaps the adjacent outer Piedmont.
