- Rocky woodlands and barrens on mafic and granitic rocks, calcareous sandstone, siltstone, metasiltstone and phyllite; also in well-drained floodplain forests, fields, roadsides, and other weedy habitats. Frequent in the mountains and Piedmont; infrequent in the Coastal Plain; often locally abundant where found.
