- The Phlox carolina/glaberrima complex is quite confusing and it's interpretation varied. For those wishing to recognize varieties of carolina, only var./ssp. carolina is known to occur in Virginia.

- Dry to mesic forests, woodlands, forest edges, clearings, and roadsides. Infrequent, mountains and Piedmont; mostly in the southern half of the state.
