Comments
Discovered at Fort Monroe by Patrick Baldwin in 1997; a likely introduction, being a single tree found on a disturbed dune. More recently, a thriving population with many old clones and shrubs was found along half a mile of high-quality dune vegetation in Virginia Beach City and seems convincingly native. Literature reports of this species from Hog and Rogue Islands on the Eastern Shore, where also likely native, have not been verified by specimens. The species is a common coastal dune plant from Maryland northward.
Habitat
Disturbed dune on Chesapeake Bay shore in Hampton City; and on ocean-fronting dunes in the northern part of Virginia Beach City. Also reported without vouchers from native dune shrublands on two Eastern Shore barrier islands.
Native Status
Not Specified
