- Mesic to dry upland forests, boulder fields, rocky woodlands, and maritime forests; in the mountains and Piedmont it is especially common on, but not restricted to, calcareous or mafic substrates. Common in the mountains; frequent in the Piedmont; infrequent in the Coastal Plain.
