- Dry to mesic upland forests and woodlands, mostly acidic and nutrient-poor; occasionally in wet flatwoods and other low, somewhat poorly drained habitats. Common in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont; infrequent and limited to the lowest elevations in mountains.
