- The largest population of this species in Virginia can be found in or near First Landing State Park, in the City of Virginia Beach. Many of its trees have toothed leaves, presumably due to introgression with other members of the Red Oak group. The maritime habitat of this population is unique for the species, which is not found so close to the coast further south.

- Maritime dune woodlands and scrub; sandhill woodlands, in areas now or formerly occupied by Pinus palustris (longleaf pine). Rare, Coastal Plain of se. Virginia, south of the James River.
