- Bottomland forests, alluvial swamps, upland depression swamps and ponds, wet flatwoods, and old fields on imperfectly drained clay soils. Locally frequent to common in the Piedmont and most of the Coastal Plain except the southern portion, where rare; frequent, at least locally, in wetland forests of low-elevation mountain valleys.
