- Treatment here follows that of Flora of the Southeastern U.S. (Weakley et al. 2023), which places this species in the genus Rubacer based on molecular and morphological evidence. Rubacer odoratum differs from Rubus (s.s.) spp. by its simple leaves and unarmed stems.
- Habitat
- Rocky upland forests (usually mesic to dry-mesic), boulder fields, woodlands, shaded outcrops, and clearings; usually on moderately to strongly base-rich substrates. Frequent to common in the mountains; rare in the n. Piedmont.
