- The separation of Acetosa from Rumex s.s. appears to be well supported by molecular and morphological data, as well as divergent evolutionary trajectories dating back to the lower Miocene (~ 22 mya). See Koenemann et al. (2023, Molec. Phylogen. Evol. 182: 107755, 1-9).

- Pastures, fields, roadsides, and other open, disturbed habitats; also commonly found in natural habitats, especially rocky woodlands, barrens, outcrops, and maritime dunes. Common throughout.
