Löve has been attributed to high-elevation outcrops in Shenandoah National Park based on chromosome count; other than a generally reduced stature, however, the morphology of these plants does not seem to differ significantly from that of low-elevation and non-outcrop specimens of S. alba var. latifolia, even within the park. These plants may be an environmental form of S. alba var. latifolia and are tentatively included here, but more study is needed.
- Habitat
- Mafic fens, calcareous fens and spring marshes, seepage swamps, edges of montane depression ponds, riverside prairies, and seasonally moist ultramafic barrens; also on middle- to high-elevation outcrops of mafic and granitic rocks. Infrequent in the mountains and n. Piedmont; rare in the n. Coastal Plain.
