- The map of this species probably includes some records of Viola vittata in southeastern Virginia. Until recently, the former has been widely treated as a var. of V. lanceolata. Their treatment as separate species follows Ballard, H.E., J.T. Kartesz, and M. Nishino. 2023. A taxonomic treatment of the Violets (Violaceae) of the northeastern United States and adjacent Canada. - Habitat
- Bogs, depression swamps and ponds, interdune swales and ponds, wet clearings, and riverside pools. Infrequent in the Coastal Plain and mountains; rare in the Piedmont; may be numerous where found.
