- Described in the North American Native Orchid Journal 14(4):238-253 (2008). Differing from P. grandiflora in its deeply laciniate lip segments, longer spur, and lax inflorescence. It also flowers later than P. grandiflora, in July rather than June. This little known entity deserves further attention with the distinct possibility of being found more widely in the mountain counties.
- Habitat
- Mesic forests, seepage swamps, and forest edges at elevations of 716-1219 m (2,350-4,000 ft). Rare in mountains; known only from Allegheny Mountain in Highland County.
