- Comments
- The varietal epithet "neofluvialis" means "of New River." Ashe's original description mentions that it is" frequent along the North Fork of the New River in Ashe County, North Carolina, and adjacent part of Virginia. The type material is in my herbarium." We have seen only a few specimens from Virginia, collected by Beadle in 1904 from two localities along the Middle and South Forks of the Holston River. It is said to have "narrower acute pubescent leaves [than macracantha], and somewhat smaller fruit which lacks the bright color so characteristic of Crataegus macracantha."
- Habitat
- Presumably river bottoms; Virginia collections without specific habitat details. Rare, sw. mountains; known only from the middle and south forks of the Holston River in Washington County. Most of the known range lies in the Blue Ridge in adjacent North Carolina.
