Comments
This commonly cultivated plant is reported as an introduction in several southeastern states. In Virginia, it is generally a rather rare adventive of urban forests, although it has recently been found in several more remote localities.
Habitat
Reported by Steury (Banisteria 37, 2011) as a "well established escape" along the Potomac River in Arlington County; also at Four Mile Run Park, City of Alexandria, along the James River in Richmond, along the Appomattox River near Petersburg, and in several additional locations. The species is shade-tolerant and has been found in disturbed upland and bottomland forests and along wooded trail edges.
