Native of the Old World Tropics, commonly introduced as a weed of sandy fields and other disturbed habitats on the southeastern Coastal Plain from Texas to North Carolina. Its known Virginia occurrences are considerably disjunct from its usual range.
Habitat
First collected (1991) as a waif in an Albemarle County flower bed, where thought to be doubtfully persistent. In 2024, a large population was found in a sandy roadside ditch in King and Queen County, suggesting that the species could be occurring elsewhere in the Coastal Plain undetected.
