- The map includes records for three varieties: var. digitalis, var. floridana (Bailey) Naczi & Bryson, and var. macropoda Fernald. Virginia herbarium specimens of Carex digitalis generally have not been determined to the varietal level, and the individual varietal maps are incomplete or skeletal at present.
- Habitat
- The species occurs in a range of mesic to dry upland forests from the lowest elevations to about 1525 m (5000 ft). It is is common statewide, but the status of the three vars. has not been fully determined. Var. digitalis appears to be widespread in the mountains and Piedmont; var. floridana is probably ± restricted to the Coastal Plain; and var. macropoda is probably restricted to lower elevations, perhaps primarily or exclusively east of the mountains.
