- Wet, shaded stones, boulders, and outcrops of primarily sedimentary rocks, both acidic and calcareous, along streams and rivers. The majority of collections are concentrated in the central Ridge and Valley region, with outlying collections in gorges of the Cumberland Mountains (Dickenson Co.) and southern Blue Ridge (Patrick Co.), and one in the southern Ridge and Valley (Scott Co.)
