- Sometimes placed in the genus Calliergonella. Allen (Maine Mosses, Vol. 2, p. 436) discusses distinctions between Hynum and Calliergonella which he separates out in the key based on presence or absence of pseudoparaphyllia (vs. scale leaves) and differences between axillary hairs both of which are typically consistent within genera.

- Various substrates (soil, logs, rocks) of mesic forests, seeps, swamp hummocks, streamsides, and old fields. Most common and widespread in the mountains, with scattered collections in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain.
