- Habitat
- The few Virginia collections are from shaded to exposed cliffs and outcrops, primarily sandstone but one site on metabasalt. Scattered at middle to higher elevations of the southern Ridge and Valley region and Cumberland Mountains, with an isolated collection at high elevation of the northern Blue Ridge (Page Co.) (Biodiversity occurrence data published by DUKE, NY, VPI. Accessed through Consortium of North American Bryophyte Herbaria (CNABH) Data Portal, Http//:bryophyteportal.org/portal/index.php, 2019-12-29). A Hanover Co. record from Breil's atlas seems phytogeographically questionable, and a supporting voucher has not been located.
