- Rich cove forests, montane oak-hickory forests, and other mesic to dry-mesic forests and forest edges; usually in moderately to strongly base-rich soils. Infrequent in the mountains, although locally common on the Blue Ridge and elsewhere at middle to high elevations; rare in the w. Piedmont.
