Records previously assigned to Phaeoceros laevis has be moved here. According to Stotler & Crandall-Stotler (2005), Phaeoceros laevis is not known north of Mexico and is primarily a species of mediterranean Europe. Specimens bearing this name are referrable to P. carolinianus which was previously considered a variety of P. laevis perhaps explaining some of the attributions of that name to Virginia.
