- On tree bark and rarely rocks in mesic to rather dry forests. Most Virginia collections are from bark of hardwoods, including oaks, red maple, sugar maple, yellow buckeye, butternut, eastern hophornbeam, and pawpaw; one collection from eastern red cedar bark. Widely distributed but scattered in both the mountains and Coastal Plain, but apparently rare in the Piedmont.
