- On damp, often dripping rocks in high-elevation forests or in gorges at lower elevations. A rare, or at least highly localized liverwort in Virginia; it has been collected only on Mount Rogers and Whitetop in the Southern Blue Ridge, at Big Stone Gap in the Cumberland Mountains, and on Sharp Top at Peaks of Otter on the Northern Blue Ridge (Biodiversity occurrence data published by CMN:CANM, F:BOTANY, NY, TENN. Accessed through Consortium of North American Bryophyte Herbaria (CNABH) Data Portal, Http//:bryophyteportal.org/portal/index.php, 2019-12-29). A record for Giles Co. was indicated in David Breil's atlas, but must be considered tentative since a supporting specimen has not been located.
