- Usually in mesic forests on outcrops and boulders of mostly siliceous rocks, on the bark of various hardwoods and great rhododendron, and occasionally on soil. Widely distributed but scattered in the mountains and Piedmont; apparently rare in the Coastal Plain, where it grows on swamp tupelo and red maple in the Great Dismal Swamp (Biodiversity occurrence data published by DUKE, F:BOTANY, NY, TENN, VPI.
