- The shade tolerance and prolific reproduction of the Nelson County population suggests that this species could become a serious invasive in native forests, at least in northern and western Virginia. It is reported as behaving invasively in other states, including Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts, where it has been declared a "noxious weed." Also reported from Maryland, West Virginia, and several other northeastern states. The corky bark of mature trees is very distinctive.
- Habitat
- Floodplain forests, mesic slope forests, old fields, and fencerows along the South Fork Rockfish River in west-central Nelson County; also recently documented in Albemarle (near Charlottesville), Frederick (near Winchester), and Fairfax (Huntley Meadows Park) counties. At the Nelson County site, this Asiatic species reportedly escaped from a nearby nursery tree farm in the 1970's, and is now common in different age classes over many acres; the full extent of this naturalized population has yet to be determined.
