- This liverwort is endemic to the higest mountains of the Southern Appalachians in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
- Habitat
- Several collections from the highest peaks (elev. > 5500 ft) of the Balsam Mountains on the southern Virginia Blue Ridge: on Fraser fir bark at summit of Mount Rogers; on red spruce bark on summit of Whitetop Mountain (Biodiversity occurrence data published by COLO, DUKE, NY, YPM. Accessed through Consortium of North American Bryophyte Herbaria (CNABH) Data Portal, http//:bryophyteportal.org/portal/index.php, 2015-02-14). A rare bryophyte survey by Davison et al. (1999) found this species to be widespread and abundant on Mount Rogers, but limited to two colonies on Whitetop.
