- In North America, this liverwort is restricted to higher elevations of the Southern Appalachians in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. It also occurs in Africa and Eurasia.
- Habitat
- Davison et al. (1999) report this species from the bark of Fraser fir at the summit of Mount Rogers, but it is not clear whether the occurrence was vouchered. For the time being, this occurrence is mapped in Smyth County where the coolest microclimate would occur locally. The Giles County and Page County populations occur at lower elevations (4,300ft and 3480ft, respectively) and grow in rock crevices. The other North American collections are epiphytic except for a collection by R.M. Schuster from "shaded but dry rock faces" at Clingman's Dome, North Carolina.
