- A rare species, known from only five sites in North America, according to FNA; however, the DUKE herbarium has specimens from several states (GA, LA, NC) not listed by FNA. This moss has been collected repeatedly at its single Virginia site. It was confirmed extant in 2015 by J.F. Townsend and T.F. Wieboldt.
- Habitat
- On limestone rocks and arborvitae branches along Cedar Creek near Natural Bridge, Rockbridge County (Biodiversity occurrence data published by COLO, DUKE, MO, NY, TENN. Accessed through Consortium of North American Bryophyte Herbaria (CNABH) Data Portal, http//:bryophyteportal.org/portal/index.php, 2015-02-10). More recently, also found on red cedars in Botetourt County in a dry, cherty, limestone woodland.
