- This species is mapped for Virginia by FNA, but the documentation is unknown to us. It is included here in the hopes that supporting specimens can be identified. Anderson, Shaw & Shaw (2009) lumped this species with S. cuspidatum. They found minor morphological differences between the two in hyaline cells at the branch tips, but these lacked geographic or ecological significance; additionally, isozyme patterns failed to detect consistent genetic differences.
