Comments
The Russell record is the first confirmed for Virginia, however several more recent records have been added to the Bryophyte Portal.
FNA points out that the name R. flaccidum (Bryum flaccidum) was incorrectly applied to what had formerly passed as that species in North America. It is correctly named R. laevifilum, however, that name has since been replaced by R. moravicum (The Bryophyte Nomenclator (2026)).
Habitat
Exposed crevices in red sandstone outcrop, at edge of Acer saccharum-Quercus-Fraxinus americana forest adjacent to high elevation pasture. Elevation 4200 ft. Apparently the species may also occupy bark, rotten wood, and even soil throughout its range (FNA 2014). Recently collected from soil in the Biology Department greenhouse at the University of Richmond. Generally, the species occurs on bark, wood, rock or soil on open areas.
