- Comments
- This taxon has been variously treated as a hybrid involving some combination of Coreopsis verticillata, C. major, and C. tripteris, or as a hybrid-origin, allopolyploid species. FSUS and FOV opt for species treatment on the basis that populations occur independently of the putative parents. However, only three populations have been documented in Virginia, and two of them grow in the immediate vicinity of putative parents (one with apparent back-crosses), strongly suggesting a hybrid status. Until we further understand the nature of these populations, it seems prudent to stay with the more conservative hybrid name.
- Habitat
- Dry power-line clearings, the few known sites all on base-rich soils. Rare, documented from three sites, one in the Fall Zone of western Caroline County (with putative parents and back-crosses), the second in the southern Piedmont (Halifax County, in the absence of putative parents), the third in the central Piedmont (Goochland Co., with putative parents).
