Iris verna var. smalliana has a more inland/Appalachian distribution compared to var. verna, which is primarily a Coastal Plain taxon. - Dry, rocky or sandy forests, pine-oak/heath woodlands, and clearings. Frequent to common in the mountains, infrequent in the inner Piedmont.
